Kenzie May Hartley + makeachange

Kenzie May Hartley is a born and bred Southern girl, growing up in small town South Carolina. Kenzie is an only child, but comes from a huge extended family, all of which were also born and raised in South Carolina. With deep traditional family values and religious faith, like her cousin, Jesse, Kenzie often felt stifled by the blinkered view honed in the small Southern town born of generations of like-minded thinking before. Both Kenzie and Jesse's fathers were identical twins, so the families were close. In fact, Kenzie and Jesse were only born one day apart, even if it wasn't planned that way. Jesse was three weeks early and Kenzie took her time over two weeks late. Because of this, and even living in the same street, they grew up like brother and sister, though even between themselves they never confided in how restricted they felt, fearing judgement. Which is why it was such a shock to Kenzie's system when she woke up one day to be told Jesse had gone... all the way to New York on his own without much more of an explanation than a letter saying he "had to live", though she knew it had to be something to do with their childhood pal, and Jesse's best friend, Damien, who had gone to New York to try to launch his music career.

Kenzie attended college and completed a degree in Education, graduating the same time as Jesse. However, her heart was never in it and when she left the job as Personal Assistant to the Editor of the town's newspaper that got her through college, she missed it like hell and began to fear the notion of getting up in front of a class full of kids from families she knew since childhood to try to teach them things she didn't necessarily believe in herself. Without Jesse there to try to convince her she was doing the right thing, Kenzie lost her resolve and pulled out of her first teaching placement she would begin following the summer Jesse did the bolt to New York City.

Feeling lost and alone, Kenzie ultimately decided to follow in Jesse's footsteps. Instead of driving, though, she 'borrowed' her father's credit card to book a flight there and under the guise of trying to find Jesse to bring him home (something she had no intention of doing), she walked away from her Southern life to be with her cousin in New York, hoping they could find their way together. She was sick with worry about what Jesse was into, if he was safe and well, and she figured if he could do it, she could too. Kenzie always harboured a hidden side to her personality, though unlike Jesse, it had nothing to do with her sexuality. Kenzie was straight, but remains a virgin, having had it instilled in her that she should save herself for marriage. It's not something she truly believes in, though, and always told herself if she found someone who stole her heart and she fell in love with, she wouldn't make him wait for marriage. She wanted the whole experience of falling in love, but never found it back home, despite some brief dating... no one lived up her father's standards for her, which royally cramped her style as it was. Kenzie has a bit of a wild, carefree side, has tattoos she has kept concealed and wants to let her hair down and try some things she never would have in SC.

As soon as she arrived, she scored herself a job as a waitress in a trendy restaurant just to have some income, and she has no idea what her next move will be beyond finding her cousin, and she doesn't care. Inwardly, she's scared and the city is intimidating, but she's determined to succeed and survive on her own, with a keen curiosity for just what life might throw at her out of the clutches of the slow Southern lifestyle.
